As the sports community shines a spotlight on hockey's lack of minority players and staff within their ranks, we have begun to take action giving a group of BIPOC youth hockey players the skills they require for their future success. Our first course of action is giving them much needed insight into what it takes to be a future leader in hockey at the next level and how to navigate the current racial climate of the world within the sport. To do this, we have created a mentorship program that creates long lasting relationships with mentors and allies who will become a support system, advocating in their favour and developing these young people through their journey.
Prominent BIPOC Figures in the Hockey Community have come together to create an environment of inspiration and education through this mentorship program summit. This event will focus on strengthening skills based on Fitness/Nutrition, Mental Health, understanding the BIPOC hockey community and expressing the challenges the youth face at this time.
Each participant will benefit by learning important life skills and the resilience needed for their future in hockey and the careers they choose afterwards. Our athletes will get much needed media coverage for their upcoming OHL draft while learning how to present themselves in front of the media while protecting themselves from negative exposure. They will also practice communicating with coaches and GMs at the highest levels and how to present themselves well in an interview setting with prospective teams. Resources and access to mentors will be continuously made available to them as needed and future meetings will include more in depth discussions about high priority topics.
As we guide these young people through the next steps in their journey, we want to create confidence in the young people they are and the people they strive to become. This Summit will be the first introduction to our program plan with face to face presentations from leaders and mentors that will guide our athletes throughout their development.
